Wayne's World
It's like people only do these things because they can get paid.
It's not very often when it's so much fun watching two live at home guys. Excellent! (please excuse any such random outbursts)
Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) are those two guys who live at home. They're from the MTV rocker generation, their only claim to fame being that they run their own public television show out of their basement. Though the plot isn't a big deal, it involves the two attracting attention that gets their show onto the big time. Wayne also attracts the attention of Cassandra (Tia Carrere), the lead singer in a rock band.
In more than a few ways, Wayne's World is a comedy all unto itself. Alternate humor is the best term that comes to mind, as there's nothing else quite like it that ... comes to mind (sequels don't count). Based off Myers and Carvey's character sketches from Saturday Night Live and directed by a rockumentry gal, it's a wonder that this expansion works half as well as it does. A little bit of everything is thrown into the mix, including Wayne and Garth (and only Wayne and Garth) talking into the camera, amusing banters of Cantonese and a completely shameless rebuke on product advertising. The improvised notions also pay off by giving it a unique spin. And though there are various spoofs from other films and the like, it never really feels like a spoof movie.
Though it doesn't necessarily accumulate any enormous laughs, there are enough chuckles spread out with an interesting variety of music to keep things rolling. A good deal of it is derived from the one-liners and goofy personalities of our dynamic duo. Myers and Carvey are totally awesome as the characters they created, though extra props have to go towards Carvey for Garth's shy, over biting paired with a particular speech pattern.
It's a wonder this movie didn't turn out dismally; I'm sure it surprised more than a few when it became a cultural hit. I can't see the humor appealing to everyone, but it's got the Bohemian Rhapsody, and everyone like that. Right?
